About the Course

Description

This Course: PS937: AI and Philosophers

The course asks whether AI can align with human beings. The article “Artificial Intelligence, Values, and Alignment” examines whose values AI systems should reflect. It presents philosophical perspectives ranging from Mill’s utilitarianism to Immanuel Kant’s theory of universal law and John Rawls’s “veil of ignorance.” The course will apply these ideas to make AI more accessible to humanists while considering how to constrain AI in order to prevent social harm. Theoretical knowledge can help guide AI alignment.

The class is asynchronous online, but the final presentation will be on Zoom (date and time TBA).
